JioHotstar is a mobile-first app that grew a proper television experience, and the living room is now where most of its long-form viewing happens. Support is broad but uneven: a 2024 television gets a native app, a 2019 model may get a cast-only experience, and a budget Android box can be slower than the phone in your pocket.
Where the JioHotstar app runs natively
- Android TV and Google TV — native app from the Play Store, including Sony, TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi televisions.
- Amazon Fire TV — Fire TV Stick 4K, 4K Max, Cube and Fire TV Edition televisions.
- Samsung Tizen — app from the Samsung store on 2018 and newer sets.
- LG webOS — app from the LG Content Store on webOS 3.5 and newer.
- Apple TV — tvOS app, with AirPlay as a fallback.
- Jio set-top box — pre-installed on JioFiber and Jio AirFiber boxes.
Older televisions without an app store can still be used through casting from a phone, which works well for films and less well for live sport because the phone becomes the bottleneck.
Signing in without typing on a remote
Every television app offers a device-code flow: the screen shows a short code and a URL, you enter the code on your phone, and the television signs in. This is the only sane way to authenticate on a remote-only device, and it also avoids storing a password on a shared TV.
- Open JioHotstar on the television and choose Sign in.
- Note the code and the address shown.
- On your phone, open that address, sign in, enter the code.
- The television refreshes automatically within a few seconds.
How many screens you can run at once
Mobile allows one device, Super two, Premium four. The count applies to simultaneous streams across all device types, not to registrations — you can install the app on five televisions and still only watch on the number your plan allows. Exceeding the limit produces a playback error rather than a clear message, which confuses a lot of households during cricket season.
Close the app on devices you are not using rather than pausing playback. A paused stream can hold a slot for several minutes. If the error persists, sign out of JioHotstar on the device you are not watching and sign back in on the one you are.
Casting, AirPlay and their limits
Chromecast and AirPlay both work for on-demand content. Live sport casts unevenly: some Android televisions handle it cleanly, others drop frames because the phone is decoding and re-encoding. If a cast looks soft, install the native app instead — the difference on a 55 inch screen is obvious.
Downloaded titles cannot be cast. The cast receiver needs its own connection, so an offline file has nothing to send.
Getting 4K out of a television
Premium is required, the television must be 4K with HDCP 2.2 on the active HDMI port, and the streaming device must be the 4K variant. A Fire TV Stick Lite, for example, will cap at 1080p no matter what the plan says. Set the television's picture mode out of "Vivid" as well; it exaggerates compression artefacts on streaming sources.
When the TV app misbehaves
Clear the app cache first, then the app data, then reinstall. On Tizen and webOS the sequence is under Settings, then Apps. If the app disappears from the store after an update, the television's firmware is probably below the supported version — check for a system update before assuming the app was pulled.
