Offline Viewing

JioHotstar downloads: offline viewing on phone and tablet

Films and episodes can be saved for flights and dead zones. Sport cannot. Here is exactly what the download button covers and how to fix a stuck queue.

JioHotstar lets you save films, episodes and originals to a phone or tablet and watch them without a connection. It does not let you save live sport, and it never will — rights holders treat a downloadable cricket match as a distribution channel of its own. Everything else works the way you would hope, with a few rules worth knowing before a flight.

Who can download on JioHotstar

Offline viewing is tied to an active subscription, and it is available on Mobile, Super and Premium. The free tier streams but does not download: if the download icon is greyed out, that is the reason, not a bug. Quality follows the plan — 720p on Mobile, up to 1080p on Super and Premium. There is no 4K download option on any tier.

Downloads are per device and per account. Signing out of the app removes the local files, so do not sign out casually on a device you have stocked for a trip.

How many titles you can keep

The app allows up to five downloaded titles per device at a time. A "title" is a film, or one episode of a series. A ten-episode season therefore consumes ten slots, which fills quickly. Delete what you have watched: swipe left on a download row on Android, or use Edit on iOS.

Storage and quality trade-offs

An hour of 1080p is roughly 1 to 1.5 GB; 720p lands closer to 500 to 700 MB. On a 128 GB phone, a five-title queue of films is comfortable. On a 64 GB device, prefer series at 720p and keep one film at 1080p for the big screen moment.

Set the default in the app's download settings rather than changing quality per title. Changing it later does not re-encode what is already saved — you have to delete and re-download.

Expiry: the part nobody reads

Downloaded titles need a periodic licence check. If the device stays offline for around 30 days, playback stops until you reconnect once. The same applies if the title leaves the catalogue when a licensing window ends: the file remains on disk but will not play, and the app usually marks it as expired rather than deleting it silently.

Before a long flight

Open the app on Wi-Fi the day you travel so every saved title refreshes its licence, then switch to airplane mode and test one episode. Two minutes of checking beats discovering the problem at the gate.

Fixing a stalled JioHotstar download

  1. Confirm you are on Wi-Fi. By default the app refuses to download over mobile data.
  2. Check free storage — under 1 GB free and the queue pauses without a clear message.
  3. Force-stop the app and reopen it. Android in particular suspends background queues aggressively.
  4. Delete the stuck item and re-add it. Partial files occasionally corrupt.
  5. Update the app. Download pipeline fixes ship quietly in point releases.

If a specific title refuses to download while others work, the title is probably not licensed for offline use. Try another episode to confirm before reinstalling anything.

Downloading on television and desktop

There is no download function on smart televisions or in the browser player. Offline viewing is a mobile feature, so plan around a tablet if you want a bigger screen on a flight. Casting a downloaded title to a television does not work either, because the cast session needs a live connection.
